THE ICONIC overnight sleeper train from London to Scotland and one of Scotland’s best-loved home and body care brands have united to reduce plastic pollution in a move that’s expected to remove some 400,000 plastic bottles from circulation by the end of the year.

ARRAN Sense of Scotland has supplied hotel amenities including miniatures of its luxury bath and shower gels, body lotion, shampoos, conditioners and handwashes to the Caledonian Sleeper since 2015.

Both companies have recently been on a journey to improve the sustainability of their product partnership and are pleased to announce that as of the end of September 2022 all miniature, individual use toiletries in the Club and Caledonian double rooms, will have been replaced with eco-friendly refills.

The change in strategy will reduce virgin plastic consumption by up to 81% and liquid waste by up to 75%.

Steven Marshall, Head of Sales and Marketing for Caledonian Sleeper, said:

“We have shifted to a more sustainable proposition while maintaining the high-quality products and experience that Caledonian Sleeper passengers have come to expect. ARRAN Sense of Scotland’s signature, After the Rain fragrance will be available in all of the new Caledonian Sleeper ARRAN branded refill dispensers.”

“When we analysed the numbers of plastic miniatures and single use toiletries that were being used on the routes versus what we could save through switching to a refillable model, it was a no brainer. The challenge was to ensure that customers were completely on board with the change and received the same indulgent customer experience as they always had. Thankfully, the feedback we’ve received so far has been overwhelmingly positive, proving that being kind to the environment is very much viewed as a first-class choice.”

For ARRAN Sense of Scotland, this is the latest move in a raft of measures the company is taking to reduce its environmental impact.

All of the company’s bottles are now made using 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) materials and it no longer produces packaging using virgin plastics. Alongside this, the company’s online warehouse is now fully carbon neutral, and it has reduced packaging and zero plastic in all orders being placed on the web shop.

Continuing along the theme of reducing waste, all the companies gift boxes are made with 80% recycled paper, which is fully recyclable or can be re-used as storage. The company has committed to ensuring that all ARRAN Sense of Scotland bottles will be made of 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) material hence eliminating the use of virgin plastic by the end of 2022.

Kevin Meechan, CEO at ARRAN Sense of Scotland, said:

“We are still on our journey towards sustainability and the change in public perception in regard to our eco-friendly measures has been positive for our company. It has made us evaluate what we could improve on and also allow us to see all the good we have already done in this sphere. We are really excited to continue this journey towards a greener future.”
