Dr Carol Marsh OBE from Edinburgh's Celestia UK recognised with Honorary Doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University

EUR Ing Dr Carol Marsh, OBE EngD CEng FIET, Head of Digital Systems at Scottish satellite communications firm Celestia UK, has had her professional achievements and the positive difference she has made to the field of engineering recognised by being awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University.

Dr Marsh became an Honorary Doctor of the University at the summer 2023 graduation ceremony for the School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment which took place on Friday 7th July at the Usher Hall.

Presenting the Honorary Doctorate, Professor Peter Andras, Dean of School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University said, “Throughout her career, Carol has taken a lead in encouraging women and girls to pursue engineering careers.

“Carol is an active contributor to our own School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment, engaging in research activity discussions, supporting research funding bids and acting as a much-valued advisor and mentor to our students.

“This award is recognition for her years of professional achievement and her extensive work supporting diversity and inclusion in electronic engineering, as well as her dedication to Edinburgh Napier University.”

Edinburgh Napier University confers honorary degrees and fellowships on distinguished individuals from a wide range of sectors whose achievements and accomplishments make them excellent role models to graduating students.

Dr Marsh has worked in the field of electronics for 40 years, specialising in programmable logic.  An alumnus of Edinburgh Napier University, where she received an HND with distinction in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1985, she also received the degree of Doctor of Engineering in System Level Integration from the Universities of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt in 2011. 

As Head of Digital Systems at Celestia UK, her remit includes expanding the digital systems capabilities for electronically scanned gateways and terminals which augment Celestia UK’s RF and antenna expertise.  Dr Marsh was awarded an OBE in 2020 for services to diversity and inclusion.

She said, “It is a real privilege to become an Honorary Doctor of the University and I am delighted as well as honoured with the award from Edinburgh Napier University.  I first qualified in my chosen field of study here, which makes returning to be conferred the honour even more special. 

“I have been fortunate to enjoy a rewarding career in electronics and had the opportunity to become involved with many diverse and challenging projects  over the years in an industry I love.  I am pleased I can continue to be an ambassador for engineering, STEM and women engineers, and have my contribution recognised in this way.”
