Staff at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) have begun a strike ballot in response to plans for significant job losses. The University and College Union (UCU) has initiated the ballot, warning that up to 220 posts are at risk as part of a cost-saving drive.

Union representatives have criticised the university’s management, arguing that the proposed redundancies will have a detrimental impact on students and the local community. They claim that the cuts are unnecessary and have called on UWS to reconsider its plans.

The ballot will run until mid-July, with the outcome determining whether industrial action will go ahead. If staff vote in favour, strikes could take place at the beginning of the next academic year.

A spokesperson for UWS stated that the university is facing financial challenges and must take difficult decisions to ensure its long-term sustainability. However, the UCU insists that any job losses will undermine the quality of education and support available to students.

Garry Ross, EIS national officer for higher education, said: “It is deeply regrettable that the University of the West of Scotland has chosen to make this large number of job cuts and pushed staff to the point of balloting for strike action.

““The proposed redundancies are a short-sighted and a damaging strategy that will have a devastating impact on the livelihoods of dedicated staff, many of whom have worked at UWS for years.

“Furthermore, it will inevitably lead to a decline in the academic provision, research capacity, and overall student experience at the university.

“We urge UWS to step back from this path and engage meaningfully with the EIS ULA to secure a no compulsory redundancy guarantee.”

The situation remains tense, with both sides urging the other to engage in meaningful dialogue to avoid disruption.
