Banner, the full-service business supplies company, has removed all unnecessary single-use catering plastics from this year’s catalogue as part of its ambition to reduce both its contribution to landfill and carbon footprint.

The business, which first started as part of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office more than 200 years ago, specialises in being an expert partner for businesses of all sizes. Its full-service offering includes the management and distribution of essential PPE and catering supplies, office stationery and print-related equipment.

By excluding all catering plastics designed for disposal after a single use from its catalogue, the business is enabling and encouraging greener purchasing behaviour for businesses and organisations across the country.

Isabel Spence, Banner Merchandising and Marketing Director, says, “If single-use catering products can be replaced sustainably, they should be taken out of the economy because they are destined for landfill.  Worse, they can end up fugitive in the environment, causing untold damage to delicate eco-systems already under threat from climate change.

“Banner is one of the furthest reaching suppliers to businesses and organisations across the country, so by replacing plastic cutlery, cups, plates and catering products like that with more sustainable alternatives, we hope to have a big overall impact that our customers can also benefit from in terms of their own commitments to the environment.”

As well as the exclusion of unnecessary single-use catering plastics, the company is reducing the number of catalogues being distributed this year while also reducing the size of the catalogue itself. This change will help reduce the amount of paper required to service its customers while also encouraging the uptake of its digital catalogue.

On top of this, the company has also scrapped the use of plastic banding on its catalogues in transport and shrink wrap on its pallets, which were either unrecyclable or required handling and baling to be recycled.

Isabel Spence continues, “Banner is proactively changing how it does business with its customers and its own internal processes. The new environmentally-focused changes will save the business six tonnes of paper, 1.66km of plastic banding and 315m2 of shrink wrap – a considerable amount of material, energy and resource!”

“As the industry begins to make more carbon-conscious choices, it’s important that as a trusted partner, Banner can help enable our customer’s goals and Net Zero targets.”
