ScottishPower has announced plans to invest over £5 billion in “rewiring Britain,” promising to create thousands of new jobs.
The utility company anticipates adding 1,000 new employees next year and expects its subcontractors to increase their workforce by thousands over the next decade.
Chief Executive Keith Anderson highlighted the necessity for a significant upgrade to the electricity transmission network and grid, marking the largest overhaul since the 1950s.
ScottishPower has recently committed to doubling its investment in the UK’s infrastructure and renewable energy sectors, allocating £24 billion by 2028, with a significant portion, approximately £11 billion, allocated to projects in Scotland.
The company plans to spend on upgrading the electrical grid, including the installation of cables and pylons, as well as construction, which is expected to lead to the hiring of an additional 1,000 employees next year, with contractors also expected to increase their workforce.
ScottishPower has secured contracts with several local suppliers for the project.
Mr Anderson told The Times: “The great thing about infrastructure investment is it’s the length and breadth of the country.
“This isn’t big contracts going into London or Glasgow or Edinburgh. This is contracts that are going to be delivered and jobs that are going to be created in local communities so it brings economic benefit right across the country.”
The 22 contractors for the work, including Balfour Beatty and Morgan Sindall, all have their headquarters in the UK.
