The iconic Old Course at St Andrews, often hailed as the birthplace of golf, is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to make the sport more accessible to Scottish players.

In a move welcomed by the golfing community, St Andrews Links Trust is offering hundreds of discounted tee times throughout the high season, giving local golfers a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s most revered courses.

Between May and October, 179 tee times will be made available at significantly reduced rates exclusively for players with Scottish postcodes.

This initiative will allow 716 golfers to play across four of St Andrews’ celebrated courses, including the legendary Old Course, as well as the Castle, Jubilee, and Eden courses.

Residents of St Andrews already benefit from annual access to all seven courses through a local ticket scheme, but this new campaign is designed to extend the privilege to golfers from across Scotland who may not have had the chance to play these historic links before.

The initiative kicks off on 21 May, with a special ballot system in place. Golfers will enter as pairs, and successful applicants will be paired up and allocated a tee time.

With demand expected to be extremely high, the ballot ensures a fair and transparent process for distributing these coveted slots.

Neil Coulson, chief executive of St Andrews Links Trust, emphasised the Trust’s mission to widen access to golf. “Golf has become increasingly popular in recent years and with this demand for our courses has surged to unprecedented levels,” he said.

“We will continue to ensure that our ticket holders and visitors have the best experience possible, while ensuring that one of the country’s most precious golfing assets is available for the public too.”

Golf has been played on the Old Course since the 15th century, and it remains a symbol of Scotland’s rich sporting heritage. The course hosts The Open Championship every five years, with the next event scheduled for 2027.

As global demand for tee times continues to rise, this initiative is a timely reminder of the Trust’s commitment to preserving the course’s legacy for future generations of Scottish golfers.

With other prestigious courses in Scotland commanding ever-higher fees, the St Andrews initiative stands out as a genuine effort to keep the game accessible to its roots.

For Scottish golfers, it represents a rare and exciting chance to walk in the footsteps of legends on the world’s most historic fairways.

For more details on eligibility and how to enter the ballot, Scottish golfers are encouraged to visit the St Andrews Links Trust website or consult their local golf clubs.
