Scotland Against Modern Slavery (SAMS), in partnership with Caledonian Sleeper, is bringing together leaders from across Scotland’s public transport industry for a dedicated event aimed at strengthening the sector’s response to modern slavery and human trafficking.
The free, in‑person conference titled ‘Protect Every Passenger – Scotland’ will welcome senior leaders, managers, operational professionals and HR teams from across Scotland’s passenger transport network.
Nearly 20,000 people were identified as potential victims of human trafficking into the UK last year, with Scotland increasingly a destination. With millions of journeys taking place across Scotland every year, those working within transport are uniquely positioned to spot warning signs, intervene safely and help protect vulnerable passengers.
The event will focus on sharing best practice across organisations, strengthening awareness of trafficking risks within transport networks and building frontline confidence in recognising and responding to potential signs of exploitation.
Delegates will also hear from expert speakers working on the frontline, including Police Scotland, Border Force, NorthLink Ferries and Brightwork Staffline.
Shan Saba, founder of Scotland Against Modern Slavery, said human trafficking is not an abstract issue but a crime that is using everyday routes and services to hide in plain sight. He said: “the transport sector has a vital role to play, and this event is about equipping people with the knowledge and confidence to act when something does not feel right.
“Every shift, every platform and every journey present an opportunity to safeguard someone who may be at risk, and by working together the sector can ensure Scotland’s transport network is not only connected but vigilant and prepared to respond.”
Delivered in partnership with Caledonian Sleeper, Protect Every Passenger – Scotland is designed as a practical, collaborative forum for organisations that play a role in Scotland’s transport infrastructure and want to be part of a coordinated, informed response to modern slavery.
