ScotRail has confirmed it has launched an internal investigation following allegations that some employees accepted gifts in exchange for contract awards.

According to The Scotsman, members of the rail operator’s property services management team have been suspended while inquiries take place. One of the gifts allegedly received is understood to have been a car.

The allegations have prompted Scotland’s nationalised rail operator to begin what it describes as an independent investigation into the claims. A ScotRail spokesperson told BBC Scotland that the investigation was under way but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing process.

“We can confirm that an independent investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson said. “We wouldn’t comment on individuals. We are unable to make any further comment until the investigation process has been completed.”

ScotRail was brought into public ownership by the Scottish Government in April 2022 after previously being run by several private firms, including Abellio, National Express and FirstGroup.

At this stage, no formal findings have been made and no details have been released regarding the scale or potential impact of the probe.
