Scotland’s first-ever podcaster is celebrating 20 years since he recorded his very first episode.

Mark Hunter, now co-founder of The Podcast Studio Glasgow with his son Cam, is one of Scotland’s original podcasting pioneers. He began podcasting from Glasgow in March 2005, long before podcasts entered mainstream culture.

His show first show ‘the tartanpodcast’, quickly gained a global audience for its celebration of unsigned Scottish bands and untold stories. It wasn’t long before Mark’s innovative work attracted international attention – he was interviewed by NPR in the United States for a piece syndicated across American radio and was invited to speak at PodcastCon, the world’s first-ever podcasting conference.

In 2008, he became Executive Editor of the world’s first podcast-focused magazine, helping shape the conversation around the fast-growing medium and supporting a new generation of creators.

Since then, Mark has presented around 300 podcast episodes and produced thousands of hours of content for clients across industries. After a spell working in digital marketing and content strategy, he returned to podcasting full-time in 2021 when he co-founded The Podcast Studio Glasgow with his oldest son, Cam.

The father-and-son team have since built what they believe to be the most experienced podcast studio in the country, with clients including Stephen Fry’s Audible series, Freakonomics Radio with Stephen J. Dubner, the official Young Scot podcast, and a host of high-profile names from Scottish TV.

Mark said: “When I started podcasting, hardly anyone knew what it was – people thought I was mad talking about audio shows you’d download from the internet. But even back then, I knew this was going to be something special. Podcasting is one of the most intimate, human ways to communicate – you’re literally in someone’s ears, telling a story or sharing an idea. That level of connection is incredibly powerful, and 20 years later, it’s more relevant than ever, particularly for businesses and individuals looking to grow their brand.”

Mark has watched podcasting evolve from a niche passion project to one of the most influential communication tools in the world. And as the industry continues to grow, he remains a passionate advocate for helping others harness its potential.

He added: “Podcasting builds trust, tells stories, and builds communities. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m proud that it all started right here in Glasgow.”
