GoFibre, which connects communities in eastern Scotland – from the Borders to Aberdeenshire – is backing Broadband Independents’ Day, a national awareness campaign helping households and businesses discover alternative network providers (Altnets) delivering full fibre services across the UK.

The week-long initiative, commencing on 4 July, has been launched by the Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA) to highlight the role independent providers now play in the UK broadband market and encourage consumers to look beyond ‘big-name’ brands.

It spotlights how Altnets are bringing more choice than ever before, while competing with incumbent providers on connectivity and customer experience, and delivering local community benefits through jobs, skills, local supply chains and social impact.

The campaign comes as fresh evidence reveals Altnets now account for more than 3.6 million live broadband connections in the UK, while more than 850,000 customers switched to an independent provider during 2025 alone.

Research commissioned by INCA, and conducted by Whitestone Insight, also found that around two-thirds of independent customers feel that smaller providers care more about their customers, and that one in ten ‘big brand’ users are considering moving to an Altnet.

Rural specialist GoFibre is Scotland’s fastest-growing broadband provider. It has over 130,000 premises spanning Aberdeenshire, Angus, Fife, Perth & Kinross, the Lothians, the Borders, and parts of north eastern England.

An independent builder and provider of full fibre broadband invests in communities through its GoFurther Fund and has an industry-leading Trustpilot score of 4.7.

Neil Conaghan, CEO of GoFibre said: “We are proud to serve rural communities from Aberdeenshire to the Borders, via Angus, Fife and the Lothians. We’re not onlydelivering 100% full fibre broadband but also supporting local employment, working with local suppliers and contributing to the local economy.

“Like many independent providers across the country, we have invested heavily in ultrafast infrastructure to help keep families connected and businesses moving. We also put people and communities at the heart of our business – demonstrated by our outstanding 4.7 Trustpilot score and our GoFurther Fund which supports community wellbeing.

“That is why we are backing Broadband Independents’ Day to help people in our build areas understand that they may have more choice than they realise, right on their doorstep.”
