Roads bosses have been urged to install flashing warning signs at a notorious Aberdeenshire junction in a bid to reduce collisions at the accident blackspot.

Gordon and Buchan MP Harriet Cross and Mid Formartine councillor Derek Ritchie have written to Aberdeenshire Council calling for a road safety review to be carried out at the A947/A920 Ellon junction south of Oldmeldrum.

It follows several collisions in the proximity of the junction so far this year, including a fatality further down the road north of Oldmeldrum.

In February, a driver was taken to hospital following a crash at the junction next to Oldmeldrum Golf Course, resulting in ambulance, police and fire crews all being called.

Residents have contacted both Ms Cross and Mr Ritchie amid ongoing concerns over blind spots at the junction, the speed of motorists approaching the turn off, and vehicles “fishtailing” around the corner of the A947.

Gordon and Buchan MP Harriet Cross said: “The safety concerns at this junction have been known about for some time.

“Every week that passes without action being taken to improve safety at the A947/A920 junction just puts more people at risk.

“Manoeuvring this part of the road is undeniably dangerous, with no signage in place to warn traffic to slow down on approach to the junction.

“Near misses are a regular occurrence with blind spots from oncoming vehicles coming around the corner towards Oldmeldrum.

“Action needs to be taken now before more lives are lost which is why my colleague, councillor Derek Ritchie, and I, are calling for a road safety review to be carried out and, once completed, acted on.”

Mid Formartine councillor, Derek Ritchie, added: “Recent collisions have shown the dangers of crossing the junction which can often lead to terrifying situations.

“It is clear that road safety improvements need to be put in place at the junction to avoid further fatalities and accidents.

“I believe flashing warning signs would help to warn drivers that crossing traffic is up ahead and I will continue to campaign for measures like this to be implemented to safeguard motorists at the A947/A920 junction.”
