A historic East Lothian estate once described by Robert Burns as “the most romantic sweet place I ever saw” is set to unveil a striking new glass atrium as demand for Scottish destination weddings continues to grow.
Dunglass Estate, home to the 15th century Dunglass Collegiate Church and owned by the Usher family for generations, has secured a six-figure funding package from Bank of Scotland to support the development of a bespoke glass atrium roof over its courtyard.
Scheduled for completion in February 2027, the new structure will create a fully weatherproof events space while preserving uninterrupted views of the sky above. The design will allow couples to celebrate beneath the stars without concern for Scotland’s famously unpredictable climate, offering a unique blend of shelter and openness.
The investment reflects a wider surge in interest in Scotland as a wedding destination, with Dunglass reporting increased bookings from across the UK and overseas. The estate currently hosts around 60 weddings each year, with particularly strong demand from European couples. Many are now opting for extended, multi-day celebrations, turning weddings into immersive experiences shared with family and friends.
The addition of the glass atrium is also expected to strengthen Dunglass Estate’s position as a year-round venue. By creating a versatile indoor-outdoor space, the development opens the door to winter weddings, festive celebrations and Hogmanay events, broadening the estate’s seasonal appeal.
For owners Simon and Joyce Usher, who have lived on the estate with their children since 2006, the project represents a careful balance between preservation and progress. Their long-term stewardship has focused on maintaining the estate’s historic character while adapting it to meet modern expectations.
Designed by Scottish architects Mozolowski & Murray, the atrium will provide a flexible setting for ceremonies, receptions and celebrations, complementing the estate’s historic church, landscaped grounds and on-site accommodation.
