Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) has commenced construction on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development in Edinburgh’s Fountainbridge area.

Once an industrial heartland of Edinburgh, Fountainbridge has undergone significant regeneration in recent years. The Lower Gilmore Place development introduces high-quality student housing, fostering a sense of community and bringing new energy to the area. Located along the Union Canal, the project offers a prime location within easy reach of the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, and Napier University. This phase will add 82 premium student beds to the existing facility, enhancing the vibrant student community along the Union Canal.

Having successfully delivered the first phase in 2023 – comprising a four-storey building with 69 modern studio apartments, communal gardens, and ground-floor social spaces – TJL is proud to continue its partnership with Glencairn Properties and ISA Architects for this expansion project. The decision to appoint Thomas Johnstone Ltd as the main contractor underscores confidence in the team’s ability to deliver high-quality student accommodation in a prime Edinburgh location.

“We are delighted to embark on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place development,” said Campbell Ross, Regional Construction Director at Thomas Johnstone Ltd. “Building upon the success of the first phase, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable living spaces that meet the evolving needs of Edinburgh’s student population.”

With work now underway, the second phase is scheduled for completion ahead of the 2026 academic year.
