Councillors in Orkney have unanimously approved plans for a £50 million six-turbine wind farm at Quanterness, west of Kirkwall. The project, one of three onshore wind farms proposed by the local authority, is expected to play a key role in boosting renewable energy production and supporting Orkney’s net-zero ambitions.

However, plans for a similar development at Wee Fea on the island of Hoy have been paused, with no timeline confirmed for when the proposal may be revisited.

The Quanterness wind farm is set to generate significant clean energy, contributing to Orkney’s efforts to enhance local energy security and further establish the region as a leader in renewable energy. With approval secured, work is expected to progress on developing the site, with further updates anticipated in the coming months.
