An exciting new, well-provisioned hardstanding 30-pitch site for camper van, motorhomes, and other visitors on the hugely popular North Coast 500 (NC 500) route around the North of Scotland has been officially opened.

Melvich Bay Caravan Park, a 25-acre site which sits just up from the beach and enjoys panoramic views of Orkney and the North Atlantic Ocean, lies on the outskirts of the village of Melvich and family bathrooms, electricity, water, wastewater disposal facilities and boasts good mobile coverage.

An overnight stay on the spacious 12 square metre pitches can be booked online at www.melvichbaycaravanpark.co.uk and costs £35.

Local shops and a coffee shop are a short walk away in Melvich, a name derived from Norse Viking for “sandy dune”, located between Thurso and Bettyhill in the historic Scottish county of Sutherland.

Situated on the A836 road, near the mouth of the River Halladale, the A897 road runs from Helmsdale, through the Strath of Kildonan and past Kinbrace, terminating at Melvich.

The new business, which is owned by locally based shareholders, one with extensive caravan park experience, and another, a financial consultant, is hoping to attract NC 500 visitors by offering them much sought-after facilities in a wonderfully attractive setting.

Director, Angus Forbes, who runs and operates a nearby farm and a contracting business, said: “the North Coast 500 route has become phenomenally popular with visitors to The Highlands.

“We recognised that logistical and hospitality support had a bit of catching up to do, so we decided to take the initiative and provide high quality local facilities, at a sensible price, which could make our visitors’ experiences more enjoyable.

“Melvich is a lovely, small and hospitable Highland village and we are hoping it will be given a welcome economic boost by the Melvich Bay Caravan Park and the steady number of visitors we hope to attract.”
