No.1 Befriending Agency Event

NO.1 Befriending Agency, a Glasgow-based social enterprise dedicated to fostering connections and companionship among seniors, is aiming to combat the winter blues with its “Cup of Friendship” event at Buchanan Galleries on Monday 15th January, otherwise known as Blue Monday.

The event is designed to create a warm and inviting space for individuals aged 65 and above to forge connections and engage in a radiant spectrum of meaningful conversations over cups of tea. Two sessions are scheduled throughout the day from 10am to 12 noon, and 1pm to 3pm.

The morning session promises an hour of creativity with arts and crafts. Participants can enjoy the delightful blend of tea and conversation while immersing themselves in a hands-on arts and crafts experience. Volunteers at No.1 Befriending Agency will also be on hand for friendly chats, playing board games and spending time in everyone’s company.

Utilising resources from the Moving Image Archive, the afternoon session will feature captivating content revolving around retail, shopping and groceries on the big screen. Attendees will have the chance to reminisce and spark conversations inspired by shared memories presented in the clips. One-to-one conversations with No.1 Befriending Agency volunteers will also be available, providing a personalised and enjoyable experience.

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Manager at Buchanan Gallerie,s said: “Whether you’re interested in arts and crafts, reminiscing about the good old days, or simply enjoy a friendly chat, No.1 Befriending Agency’s ‘Cup of Friendship’ event is a great way beat the January blues.

“The event aims to counteract one of the gloomiest days in the calendar and turn it into a joyful day creating colourful friendships and connections, over a warming cup of tea. We encourage those who are looking to brighten up their Monday to join us and discover all the benefits of befriending with No.1 Befriending Agency.”

Shonagh Hendry, Operations Manager at No.1 Befriending Agency, said: “Here at No.1 Befriending Agency, we’re thrilled to host the ‘Cup of Friendship’ event at Buchanan Galleries, tackling winter blues head-on. Our goal is simple: to create a space where isolated older people can enjoy cups of tea, engage in arts and crafts, and share cherished memories.

“As we continue our mission against loneliness, we invite everyone to join us in turning Blue Monday into a day of vibrant connections and shared joy. Interested in making a lasting impact? Consider signing up with us to volunteer and be part of our efforts to combat social isolation in our community.”

No.1 Befriending Agency is an award-winning social enterprise set up in Glasgow in 2016 with the aim of reducing loneliness in older people through free befriending services. These services involve trained volunteers engaging with socially isolated members of the community and spending quality time with them to hear their stories, along with providing regular activities, outings, and social events, creating opportunities for people to connect with the wider community.

The activity is part of the centre’s ongoing commitment to support the local community, empower local initiatives and foster positive change in the area. Buchanan Galleries has provided financial support to No.1 Befriending Agency via its Landsec Futures Community Grants Programme, a £20m fund which aims to make an impact in the local area and empower the local community to make future-forward decisions.
