The study, by leading SEO platform Ahrefs, analyzed 80 of the most popular Christmas-related keywords, including “Christmas”, “How many days until Christmas”, “Christmas movies”, “Christmas gift ideas”, and “Christmas music”, in every city or town in Scotland with a population above 50,000 people. This allowed them to calculate which cities had the most Christmas-related searches per 100,000 residents, discovering Scotland’s top most Christmas-obsessed areas.

Edinburgh is Scotland’s second most Christmas obsessed city, with 41,610 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people.

Aberdeen is the third most Christmassy city in Scotland, with 10,840 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people.

Dundee, Livingston and Dunfermline are the fourth, fifth and six most Christmas obsessed cities in the UK, with 7,100, 6,150, and 5,030 Christmas-inspired searches per 100,000 people.

At the other end of the scale, Paisley is the Scotland area with the least interest in Christmas, with just 2,410 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people – followed by East Kilbride, which has just 2,800 Christmas-related searches per 100,000 people.

Tim Soulo, CMO at Ahrefs, commented on the findings:

“It is fascinating to see how interest in the Christmas season varies from city to city in Scotland, with some cities showing comparatively little interest in Christmas, and some showing incredible enthusiasm for all things Christmas-related, from trees and decorations, to cosy Christmas pyjamas and gifts. Search interest can offer us powerful insights into festive trends.”
