A MEMBER of a Northeast port’s team has been selected to represent the business promoting awareness of and encouraging participation in a Tayside-wide environmental programme.
Hamish Murray, Projects Team Leader at Montrose Port Authority, will now act as an ambassador for Circular Tayside, a joint initiative between Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, Perthshire Chamber of Commerce, and Zero Waste Scotland, funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
The aim of Circular Tayside is to encourage a thriving circular economy within the region with innovative businesses at the forefront, shouting about the work they do and encouraging others to consider how they can reuse valuable resources.
Montrose Port Authority has been working hard in recent years to secure projects which contribute to a green economy – the flagship being the Seagreen offshore wind farm, currently under construction 27km off the Angus coast, as well as wave energy trials last year.
The 1,075MW 114-turbine wind farm is a joint project by SSE Renewables and Total, who selected Montrose as the location for its Operation and Maintenance base.
Mr Murray said: “I am delighted to be representing the port in such an important forum and to showcase how we, as a traditional, heavy industry business, are trying to do our bit to protect the environment and grow a green economy in Angus and across Scotland.
“The ambassadors of Circular Tayside represent the variety of business operating across the region and it’s great to see how we are all able to work together and share our ideas and experience to help the region prosper.”
At a time when the world’s resources are becoming scarcer, the traditional linear economy – where we “make, use, dispose” of raw materials – is no longer sustainable.
The circular economy is one where businesses and consumers work together to make things last and get as much value from our products and resources as possible.
Vaso Makri, Circular Tayside Manager, said: “Circular Tayside aims to inspire local organisations to become more circular in their use of resources, and we are very lucky to have a fantastic Circular Tayside Ambassadors group that helps us do it.
“During our quarterly meetings our ambassadors advise us and offer their insight on circular issues relevant to their sector and help us design our project in a way that makes it as relevant as possible, to as many businesses as possible.
“We are very happy to have Hamish on the team – as a recent graduate his experience in sustainability and the marine industry, as well as the Port’s ambitious plans, make him an indispensable team member and someone we look forward to working with in the months to come.”
