Bookings stronger than expected despite challenging climate for tourism businesses
Melvich Bay Caravan Park, the North Coast 500’s overnight stay of choice, has fully reopened for the 2026 season, welcoming guests back to its panoramic 25‑acre site overlooking the North Atlantic and Orkney.
While the wider tourism and hospitality sector is experiencing a challenging period amid global uncertainty and rising costs, the team at Melvich Bay says bookings in the first month since reopening have been better than expected.
Following a strong inaugural year, which recorded more than 1,000 visitor night stays, early interest for the remainder of the 2026 season has provided cautious optimism.
Co‑owner Angus Forbes said: “Since we fully reopened in mid‑March, the level of bookings over the first month has actually been better than we anticipated, which is really encouraging given the current climate.
“That said, we’re very aware this is a difficult time for many businesses. We’re hearing from others who are struggling, and we’ve also seen some guests cancel or adjust their plans due to higher fuel prices and wider uncertainty. People are being much more careful with travel decisions.”

Located on the popular North Coast 500 route and just a short walk from the award‑winning Melvich Beach, the park continues to attract visitors looking for unspoilt scenery, modern facilities and a peaceful stopover along Scotland’s northern coastline.
Director Malcolm Morrison added: “There’s no doubt it’s a tough trading environment at the moment, and the knock‑on effects of rising fuel costs and global events are being felt across the sector.
“We’re grateful that Melvich Bay has seen a positive response so far, and we’re focused on offering good value, high standards and a welcoming experience while being mindful of the pressures visitors and other businesses are facing.
In Case You Missed It:
“We remains committed to investing in the park, supporting responsible tourism along the NC500, and working collaboratively with the local community during what continues to be an uncertain period for the industry.”
