A MELROSE-based tuition company is offering a vital lifeline to families affected by the lockdowns and teachers’ strikes.

First Class Learning (FCL) offers weekly tuition centre sessions in Maths and English to complement students’ learning in school and is aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland.

The company was started in September last year by Juliun Schraader and his partner when they bought the FCL franchise for territories in the Borders. They now run weekly classes at their Melrose learning centre with up to 40 students.

Juliun, originally from South Africa, served with the British Army as an army medic and physical training instructor. During his seven year stint he taught advanced first aid and battle trauma skills to recruits and served in Afghanistan and Iraq for six months. On leaving the army he worked in Aberdeen and Holland as an offshore medic as well as providing first aid training.

” My partner has over 10 years experience as a secondary school English teacher and has taught at numerous schools across Scotland, throughout my career I have always had a training role so a business connected with teaching or learning seemed a logical move,” said Juliun.

He added, “Rather than start from scratch we decided that investing in a well established tuition franchise would be the way to go. With 300 franchisees throughout the UK and a great reputation we decided on FCL. We have been impressed with their methods and learning materials and things are going from strength to strength. Naturally parents and their children have concerns about missing learning through the lock downs and more recently the teachers’ strikes. I hope what we do can help plug any gaps and give students more confidence in English and Maths. The fact that

FCL’s learning programmes are aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland means we are building on what students are already studying in school and we are proud to be the first FCL franchisee in the Borders.”

Currently Juliun runs the Melrose centre with part-time help but has ambitions to open a second centre in the Borders as demand grows.
