Aberdeen-headquartered Maritime Developments Ltd (MDL) has been awarded a King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, marking its third accolade under the UK’s most prestigious business awards and reinforcing its position as a specialist in advanced back-deck engineering solutions for the global energy sector.

MDL is among just 185 organisations nationwide to be recognised in 2026 across the four King’s Award categories. The latest honour highlights the company’s Wheeled Horizontal Lay System (WHLS), an engineering solution designed to overcome the limitations of conventional flex-lay operations in challenging offshore environments.

The WHLS introduces an integrated wheel mechanism that reduces friction during offshore retrieval, enabling higher-capacity operations while maintaining a compact, modular footprint. By addressing constraints such as the capstan effect, the system expands the capabilities of horizontal lay operations into deeper waters and more complex project scopes, including decommissioning and dynamic cable installation. Both applications have already been proven in Brazil’s deepwater environment.

Its modular design also allows mobilisation on locally available vessels, offering operators a more cost-effective and lower-emissions alternative to dedicated installation vessels across both traditional oil and gas and renewable energy projects.

The award builds on MDL’s previous recognition with a King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2024 and a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2022. Those honours reflected a sustained period of global growth for the business, including a 120% increase in export revenue over three years and expansion into key markets such as Brazil, West Africa and the United States.

Derek Smith, CEO and founder of MDL, said: “To receive our third King’s and Queen’s Award — and our first for Innovation — is a proud milestone for MDL.

“As a business built from the ground up, this recognition reflects not only the strength of our engineering solutions like the WHLS, but the ingenuity and commitment of our people in solving real challenges for our clients worldwide.

“The three Awards to date across innovation and international trade demonstrate the strength of our forward-thinking strategy: combining engineering ingenuity with intentional global expansion to bring meaningful solutions to our customers’ challenges.

“It’s certainly a special moment to reflect on how far we’ve come – and the opportunities ahead.”

The King’s Awards for Enterprise, renamed in 2023 to reflect His Majesty The King’s commitment to continuing the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, are now in their 60th year. Winners are permitted to use the King’s Awards emblem for five years, signalling recognised excellence to customers, partners and international markets.
