John’s Coffee House and Tavern, a historic gathering place for influential minds like Adam Smith and David Hume, is reopening in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile after a £500,000 refurbishment by CoDE Concepts.
Founded in 1688, the original establishment was a hub for intellectual discussions and social debates, serving as a central spot for lawyers, writers, and merchants.

It was tragically lost in the Great Fire of Edinburgh in 1824 but is now being revived to honor its rich past while celebrating local Scottish produce.
The new space, designed by Edinburgh-based Morgan Architects, highlights the historic details of the coffee house, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere for guests to enjoy breakfast, drinks, and Scottish cuisine throughout the day.

Signature drinks include the ‘Cauld Cock & Feather’ and ‘The Enlightened Irish Coffee,’ while the menu features Scottish cheeses, charcuterie, and artisanal chutneys from local suppliers.
Located in a Category A-listed building within Edinburgh’s Old Town Conservation Area, John’s Coffee House and Tavern invites visitors to step into history while savoring the best of Scotland’s culinary offerings.
The revival aims to continue the tradition of fostering open debates and discussions, as it once did during the Scottish Enlightenment.
