Convergix Automation Solutions, the US-headquartered engineering firm, has announced a proposal for significant redundancies at its Scottish operation in Arbroath, potentially impacting up to 30 skilled positions. The move, described by the company as a “global organisational realignment,” is aimed at recalibrating its cost base to “align with current market conditions.”

Employees at the Elliot Industrial Estate facility were informed of the proposed changes during a meeting with senior executives who travelled from Convergix’s Michigan headquarters. The consultation process is underway, with job losses anticipated to occur after the festive period.

This development marks a notable shift in direction for the company, which specialises in complex automation assembly projects, including robotic solutions and integrated vision systems, particularly within the lucrative life sciences sector. Earlier this year, the firm had publicly stated its intent to expand its Arbroath workforce, seeking to recruit up to 50 additional employees to support growth. At the time, the company indicated it was “struggling” to attract qualified staff.

Convergix Automation Solutions acquired the Arbroath-based business, formerly known as AGR Automation, in 2022. The acquisition was part of Convergix’s strategic expansion into Europe, with initial plans to substantially grow its UK operations and potentially double its workforce across Arbroath and Ballymena, Northern Ireland, by the end of that year. AGR Automation, founded in 1970, had established a strong reputation for designing and integrating high-value automated systems for multinational clients, especially in medical device manufacturing.

Despite the proposed redundancies in Arbroath, Convergix maintains its commitment to its UK presence, emphasising that the restructuring is a global initiative rather than targeting any single location.

Walker Mattox, President of consumer and life sciences solutions at Convergix, addressed the situation, stating: “We are conducting a global comprehensive organisational restructuring to align with current market conditions. In Arbroath, we are in the process of considering redundancies that could impact a number of roles across several departments.”

“This positions us for long-term success while continuing to deliver exceptional value to customers, as we remain committed to our UK presence. We’re grateful for the contributions of our colleagues and are committed to treating everyone with fairness, dignity and respect throughout this process.”

Convergix currently employs around 130 people across its UK operations, with roughly 87 based at the Arbroath facility. The proposed job cuts represent a significant proportion of the local workforce, raising concerns within the Angus community about the future of skilled engineering jobs in the region.
