One of Scotland’s leading environmental charities, the Green Action Trust, has appointed Tom Campbell as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The charity addresses climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental inequality through delivering environmental regeneration projects across Scotland.
Mr Campbell joined the Green Action Trust in 2023 as Strategy Director before taking up the CEO position on an interim basis in February 2024.
Speaking of his appointment, Mr Campbell said he was looking forward to working “with pragmatism” to address Scotland’s impact on the world’s climate, to protect habitats and encourage biodiversity.
Tom Campbell said: “Having served as the interim Chief Executive for a number of months, I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue the excellent work of the organisation.
“Along with the wider team, I’m committed to creating lasting change with pragmatism, making a real difference to people’s lives while protecting habitats and encouraging biodiversity.
“I am especially looking forward to strengthening our work to tackle environmental injustice and expanding our partnerships.
“We work in some of the most deprived areas of Scotland and are looking to expand our reach, but we need to ensure that’s done with the support of policymakers, private businesses and, of course, communities themselves.
“By regenerating environments, creating safe active travel routes, encouraging biodiversity, and more, we bring communities together and help them to thrive.”
The Green Action Trust leads and administrates the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), a 40-year programme funded by the Scottish Government.
It works to change the face of central Scotland by restoring and improving its rural and urban landscape.
Covering 10,000 square kilometres, the CSGN is one of the largest and most ambitious green infrastructure programmes in Europe and works in 87% of Scotland’s most deprived areas.
The programme has supported the planting of over 20 million trees since its inception.
Commenting on the appointment, Michael Roe, chair of the board of trustees at the Green Action Trust, said, “We are delighted to appoint Tom as our permanent CEO.
“He understands the rich history of the charity and our extensive record of delivering substantive regeneration through both the CSGN and Green Action Trust.
“He also recognises our potential to do more and expand our reach through extending and strengthening our partnerships with local authorities and private enterprises that are aligned to our mission.”
“Under Tom’s leadership, we anticipate continued growth and environmental and social impact all across Scotland.”
Prior to joining the Green Action Trust, Mr Campbell worked at CEO and director level in several organisations and sectors. He was also the architect of the North Coast 500.
“He created, developed and implemented the touring route and, as its Executive Chair, he led the brand to global recognition.
