Subway staff in Glasgow are set to walk out over three consecutive days during one of Scotland’s biggest music events, with the strike scheduled to coincide with the TRNSMT festival at Glasgow Green.

More than 100 workers represented by Unite the union will take strike action on Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July amid an ongoing dispute with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) over working conditions.

The industrial action follows three days of walkouts last week and will now affect tens of thousands of festival-goers, with TRNSMT expected to draw crowds of around 50,000 each day. The festival site is located just half a mile from the busy St Enoch subway station.

Unite claims the subway network is severely understaffed — a claim SPT denies. The union has also been operating a continuous overtime ban since 13 June, with members rejecting a recent interim pay and conditions offer.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite’s members will no longer accept intolerable working conditions. SPT has had years to resolve the problem and has failed to do so. Our members have said enough is enough. We will support them all the way in their fight for better jobs, pay and conditions.”

While SPT has not issued fresh comment, it previously stated it remained “committed to seeking a resolution through positive ongoing negotiations”. The operator also confirmed that affected season ticket holders would receive one day of pay-as-you-go credit on their smartcards for each strike day.

Last month’s subway strikes coincided with major concerts at Bellahouston Park, including performances from Sting, Simple Minds and Stereophonics.
