Great British Energy (GBE), the newly established public energy company dedicated to advancing the UK’s transition to clean energy, is set to hold its inaugural board meeting in Aberdeen.
Chairman Juergen Maier will convene the leadership team, including interim CEO Dan McGrail and Energy Minister Michael Shanks, to focus on creating employment opportunities.
Mr. Maier expressed confidence that investments by GBE will lead to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs across the north and north-east of Scotland.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, which is essentially a preparatory gathering as the company awaits formal establishment via Royal Assent, Mr. Maier emphasised that the team’s initial focus will be on governance and investment strategy. Several key positions, including the head of legal, head of people, and head of local power, will be based in Aberdeen.
GBE will unveil more details on its investment strategy in the coming months, focusing on projects that generate local employment and contribute to the clean energy transition.
Key criteria for investments include developing projects that pave the way for GBE to become a clean power company, creating local jobs both within projects and their supply chains, and accelerating the generation of clean power for British citizens.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks announced that GBE will receive £8.3 billion in funding over the current parliamentary term. He stated: “We now have a fantastic team in place to lead Great British Energy and establish the company in Aberdeen.
“By unlocking homegrown clean power projects, Great British Energy will support thousands of well-paid jobs in Scotland and across the country, ensuring energy security for the British people.”
Today’s board meeting marks another step forward for the company as it prepares to make its first investments. Additionally, GBE will launch its new website to enhance transparency and facilitate industry engagement.
