Dunolly House in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, one of the grandest and most venerable buildings on Tayside, and an iconic location of Scottish piping history, is being brought to market by the Dundee branch of DM Hall Chartered Surveyors.
For the visitor it is easy to imagine the shade of a piper perched on the roof terrace of the dramatic, crenellated round tower which dominates the C-listed Victorian Mansion as it stands guard on a northward bend of the river, overlooking small, wooded islands.
Dunolly House was built in 1890 by Duncan MacDougall, who was piper to Breadalbane at Taymouth Castle, but ran a pipe-making business in Aberfeldy. He was appointed by Royal Warrant as bagpipe maker to Queen Victoria and made a set of Highland pipes for her personal piper.
Sadik Chowdhury, of DM Hall Dundee, who is leading the marketing initiative of Dunolly House, said: “This is not only a building with a remarkable history, which must have echoed to the sound of the bagpipes in its day, but is also architecturally pleasing with its three-storey tower, high-pitched roofs and expertly crafted stonemasonry.
“It has been used as a hostel for girls boarding at Breadalbane Academy and is now being presented as very rare development opportunity with relevant permissions for eight serviced apartments or possibly short-term let apartments.
“The buyer will benefit from the substantial remedial works and improvements that the building has undergone in preparation for its redevelopment. It is surrounded by similarly striking Victorian homes and holiday accommodations.”
Dunolly House stands in 0.68 acres of land directly fronting the river and the three storeys, including a mezzanine and a modern extension, extend to an impressive 6,938 sq ft. As well as traditional architectural features throughout, it has nine bedrooms, two function rooms, two kitchens and two offices.
It lies in Kenmore Road in Aberfeldy, a pretty, lively town mentioned by Robert Burns in The Birks of Aberfeldy. It is a thriving tourist location known for its rich history, natural beauty and local culture.
Interest in Dunolly House is expected to be strong. Viewing is strictly by appointment and should be arranged through Sadik Chowdhury. Offers over £475,000 are invited.
Sadik Chowdhury is a commercial surveyor in the Dundee office of DM Hall Chartered Surveyors.
