A new report by DiscoverCars.com has investigated where in the world the cheapest and most expensive parking and parking infraction fines can be found.

The cities were scored and ranked based on the average hourly on-street parking charge alongside the average cost of parking fines for minor and serious violations. From these, the top 10 ranking was created – and Edinburgh ranked in seventh place.

The study looks into the prices of the average hourly on-street parking costs and the average cost of parking violation fines of 80 global cities.

The top 10 most and least expensive cities are:

The findings revealed that 7th place Edinburgh’s hourly parking costs were £4.55 – the fifth highest global charge. A parking fine might be nearly a hundred pounds, at £99.11.

Ranking in first place was the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. There, parking violation fines were found to be £257.66 and hourly parking, an average of £5.22.

Following in second place is Chicago, United States. Hourly parking costs are approximately £5.03, and a parking violation, around £203.91.

London, United Kingdom came in third place. The English capital was found to have the most expensive hourly rate out of the studied cities, costing drivers approximately £6.05. Parking infractions there cost around £104.26.

Copenhagen and Seattle rounded off the top five.

Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at DiscoverCars.com, commented:

“Looking at the parking charges of cities from across the world’s four corners, we found these insights to be very interesting!

“In this study, there were some notable trends that our team at DiscoverCars.com found. For the most expensive combined costs for hourly parking charges and fines, for example, 6 were in Europe.

“The difference between the highest and lowest parking violation fine was found to be about £329.50 – with Mexico City’s leading charge of £337.77 and Kuala Lumpur’s cheapest of £8.27 – so, depending on where you travel, not knowing the laws of the road could cost you, literally! To avoid this, we recommend researching the road regulations before travelling to your destination.”

DiscoverCars.com has also looked separately into the world’s most costly cities for hourly parking on the street. Interestingly, they found that 80% of these cities were in Europe.

The report highlights the disparities in global parking fines. While hourly parking charges are a fact of life for drivers, parking fines are usually avoidable, as long as drivers are mindful of the law and local parking regulations.
