Dundee and Angus College has announced ambitious plans for a £265 million transformation, which could see major relocations of its campuses in Dundee and Arbroath. The proposal includes moving the Dundee Kingsway campus to a new state-of-the-art facility at the Wellgate Shopping Centre and relocating the Arbroath campus to the town centre, potentially at the Abbeygate Shopping Centre.

Under the plans, the existing Kingsway and Arbroath campuses would close, while the Gardyne campus in Dundee would be expanded to include a green skills and innovation hub. The college said it is in discussions about funding options for the redevelopment.

Principal Simon Hewitt described the project as “an amazing opportunity to build world-class facilities that are fit for the future.” He added: “If we were to develop a new campus on the site of the Wellgate Shopping Centre, it would put the college at the heart of Dundee’s regeneration and breathe much-needed new life into the city centre.”

The redevelopment aims to bring education, employability services, and support under one roof—something the college says would be a first for Scotland. The Wellgate Centre, which has been exploring sustainable repurposing options beyond retail use, welcomed the proposal. A spokesperson said: “The prospect of establishing a city centre college campus delivering learning, employment services, and support is hugely exciting. We continue to work with the council and the college to try to make this vision a reality.”

In Arbroath, moving the college into a central location is expected to boost footfall and contribute to town centre regeneration. An artist’s impression of the proposed Arbroath campus shows modern buildings with multi-level green spaces.

While funding for the £265 million project is yet to be finalised, Dundee and Angus College is optimistic about its ability to secure investment. The plans mark a significant step in aligning education with urban renewal efforts in both Dundee and Arbroath.

If approved, this redevelopment could position Dundee and Angus College as a leader in modern education infrastructure while revitalising key areas in both cities.
