Drumlanrig Castle & Country Estate is delighted to announce the completion of renovations at Montagu Cottage, a charming self-catering property set within the breathtaking surroundings of the Estate. Offering a perfect blend of historic character and modern luxury, Montagu Cottage is now available for guests seeking an idyllic retreat in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway.
Nestled beside Laundry Cottage, another of the estate’s popular self-catering properties, Montagu Cottage is just a short walk from the iconic Drumlanrig Castle. The cottages, originally built in the early to mid-19th century, served as the Estate’s laundry before being remodelled in 1871 by Charles Howitt and later converted into two separate cottages in 1924 by J. Laird of Glasgow. Retaining their Category B listed status, these properties are an integral part of the Estate’s history, seamlessly blending heritage with contemporary comforts.
Like Laundry Cottage, Montagu Cottage comfortably accommodates six guests across three beautifully designed bedrooms, including a king-size or twin room and two en-suite double bedrooms. Guests can unwind in the open-plan living and kitchen area, warmed by a striking double-fronted wood burner. The large family bathroom features a walk-in shower and a luxurious roll-top bath, perfect for a relaxing soak after a day of exploring the Estate.
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the private garden with a patio, where they can soak in the breathtaking views over the Nith Valley, while sheep and lambs roam just beyond the fence. The cottage is ideally situated next to the Estate’s walking network, making it an excellent base for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers.
Perfect for Families, Friends & Dog-Friendly Retreats, Montagu Cottage welcomes up to two dogs, making it a fantastic option for pet-friendly holidays. For larger groups, the property can be booked alongside the adjoining Laundry Cottage, which also accommodates six guests and features a large hot tub for an extra touch of luxury.
This is an exciting NEW addition to the Estate, adding to its collection of 3 self catering apartments and 5 holiday cottages. The estate was thrilled to introduce Queensberry Cottage to the collection, in 2024, meanwhile on the wider estate, just 10 minutes’ drive from Drumlanrig Castle, Dabton House, a luxurious exclusive-use venue which sleeps 24, opened in 2023, following a full renovation. It offers the perfect base for large family celebrations and group ‘get togethers’, with 11 exquisitely appointed ensuite bedrooms and several reception areas in which to relax and dine.
From March to October, guests staying at any of the holiday houses on the estate can enjoy exclusive guest benefits including free entry to the Estate’s Gardens and Adventure Playground. A variety of additional experiences are available to enhance their stay, including Castle Tours, e-bike hire, loch and river fishing, simulated game shooting, and Scottish Assault Courses. The Estate also hosts a range of exciting events throughout the year.
Montagu Cottage is now available for bookings, offering an unforgettable getaway in one of Scotland’s most picturesque locations. Whether seeking a peaceful retreat, an active countryside adventure, or a stay steeped in history, guests are sure to fall in love with the charm and beauty of Montagu Cottage and the Drumlanrig Castle & Country Estate.
