Douglas Ross has underlined his commitment to address visa concerns within the fishing sector after meeting industry leaders in Peterhead.
The Scottish Conservative leader, who is standing for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East at the general election, also visited Peterhead Fish Market, the largest whitefish market in Europe.
During his meeting with Scottish Seafood Association chief executive Jimmy Buchan, Francis Clark of the Scottish Pelagic Processors Association, Sinclair Banks of Lunar Fishing Group and Richard Duthie and Allan Stephen of Denholm Seafoods, Mr Ross underlined his determination to champion the fishing industry.
He spoke with the industry bosses about a variety of issues, including the benefits of being out of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the implications of the increased salary threshold for skilled worker visas.
Scottish Conservative candidate for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, Douglas Ross, said: “It was excellent to speak to the group of industry leaders and have a tour of Peterhead Fish Market, which is renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and sustainable fishing practices.
“We spoke of the increase in catching opportunities and landings in Peterhead since the UK left the CFP and negotiated quota shares as an independent coastal state.
“This has brought benefits to the industry at a time when the SNP would gladly sacrifice that by re-joining the CFP.
“Labour issues also came up in the discussions and I highlighted to the group that I want to make sure our domestic food security isn’t harmed through unintended consequences.
“I am absolutely committed to championing the fishing industry and ensuring the sector has a voice at the table if I am elected for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East.”
