Delta Aquariids: Meteor Shower to Light Up Scottish Skies

29/07/2024

Stargazers across Scotland are in for a treat tonight as the Delta Aquariids meteor shower peaks.

The celestial spectacle originates from the constellation Aquarius and is expected to be particularly visible in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Observers can expect to see up to 25 meteors per hour, with the best viewing time between midnight and dawn.

For the best experience, find a comfortable spot away from city lights, allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and enjoy the celestial display.

The New Moon tonight will create ideal dark sky conditions, enhancing the meteors’ visibility.

The Delta Aquariids are active from mid-July to late August, but tonight offers the best chance to glimpse these “shooting stars”.

If you miss the Delta Aquariids tonight, don’t worry – another major meteor shower is just around the corner.

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the most prolific and beloved meteor showers of the year, will peak in mid-August and will be at their best on the nights of August 11-12 and 12-13.

During the peak, skywatchers can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, with the best viewing times being from midnight to dawn
