Data solutions and ESG technology firm Utopi today announce the visit of Scottish Government Business Minister Richard Lochhead to their Glasgow head office, and his visit highlights the positive impact Utopi’s success has had on the Scottish economy.

Business Minister Richard Lochhead visited Utopi to understand more about their innovative PropTech solutions, about the impact their almost 20 billion strong data lake is having on multi- tenant real estate, and to learn more about the decarbonization journey of the real estate sector. With environmental policy being closely aligned with economic policy, Mr Lochhead has an interest in the digital economy and sees Utopi as a key player in Scotland.

Over the last two decades, Scotland has become a hub for innovation and technology, and with Utopi basing their HQ in Glasgow, a city with strong industrial roots; it’s a tribute to the economic significance the city has had on the UK. Plus, Utopi is a business with great support from Scottish investment, with Scottish Enterprise and Scottish National Investment Bank being key contributors to the organization since their inception in 2019.

Of the visit, Mr Lochhead said: “It has been fascinating to see how Utopi use technology and data to decarbonise buildings, not only helping with Scotland’s net zero ambitions but growing our economy in the process. Innovation is the life-blood of a thriving and vibrant economy which is why supporting Scotland’s start-up companies is crucial to our prosperity and also helps develop solutions to global challenges. I’m pleased to see this innovative business has been supported by Scottish Enterprise since 2020, as well as receiving £5 million investment from the Scottish National Investment Bank, to expand the company and its workforce.”

Alongside Scottish Enterprise, this visit has been a milestone for the Scale-up, and a nod to what’s ahead for the digital economy in Scotland.

Jonathan Burridge, CEO and Co-Founder of Utopi, said of the visit: ”Hosting Minister Lochhead was a privilege, and we’re proud to be a Scottish business he sees value in. We always say being Scottish is our superpower, and being founded here has opened many doors for us. Now to have the opportunity to discuss policy and economic opportunity in Scotland, it’s a sign of the impact we’re having. It also marks the importance of decarbonisation and environmental responsibility in real estate, and beyond.”

Scottish Enterprise director of business growth Michelle Kinnaird accompanied Mr Lochhead on his visit and said: “Utopi is a prime example of a company with ambition, and we have been on the journey with them from start up to scale up and global expansion as the team have built the company.

“The recent project to improve data and the use of artificial intelligence supported by Scottish Enterprise is helping Utopi to innovate further as well as continue to improve the energy efficiency of buildings that also supports Scotland’s net zero targets.”
