International law firm CMS has announced a significant round of promotions in Scotland, with 40 individuals advancing across its Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen offices. The promotions encompass both legal and business services roles, reflecting the firm’s ongoing investment in its Scottish capabilities.

Among the key appointments are two new Of Counsel positions. Andy Atwell, based in Aberdeen, and Jenni Darling, based in Edinburgh, have both been promoted to Of Counsel. Both specialise in employment disputes, highlighting a strategic focus within the firm’s legal practice areas.

The firm also elevated eight lawyers to Senior Associate roles. These include Claire Quinn, Jaimie-Jean Hunter, Ruth Gardiner, and Niamh Williamson in Aberdeen; Ewan Wilson and Laura Rankin in Glasgow; and Molly McGrady and Anna Owens in Edinburgh. This broad distribution of senior promotions underscores the firm’s commitment to developing talent across its regional Scottish hubs.

Further strengthening its professional ranks, CMS appointed 14 individuals to mid-level associate positions. Additionally, 16 promotions were made within the firm’s critical business services and Legal Services Unit teams, demonstrating an integrated approach to growth and operational excellence.

This latest series of advancements follows earlier strategic appointments in March, when Abbie Harley, Charlie Denham, Rebecca McGladrigan, and Nicola Insley were named partners in Scotland.

Allan Wernham, Managing Director of CMS Scotland, commented on the promotions, stating: “These 40 promotions reflect the depth of talent across our Scottish offices and the important contribution our people make to the continued success of CMS in Scotland.”

Mr Wernham further emphasised the firm’s dedication to professional development: “Supporting career development at every level is central to our growth strategy and to the high-quality service we deliver for clients.” He specifically congratulated the new Of Counsel appointees, adding: “I am particularly pleased to congratulate Andy Atwell and Jenni Darling on their appointments as Of Counsel. Their progression recognises the quality of their work, their commitment to clients and the trust they have earned from colleagues across the firm.”

CMS maintains a significant presence in Scotland, with over 500 professionals across its three offices, providing a blend of local market expertise and global resources to its diverse client base.
