Cancer Research UK has confirmed it will close 88 of its shops across the country by May 2026 as part of a major overhaul of its retail network.
The charity, which currently operates around 600 stores, said the decision reflects increasing financial pressures and shifts in shopping habits. Rising national insurance contributions, inflation and changing consumer behaviour were all cited as key factors in the move.
A further 100 closures are planned by April 2027, meaning almost one-third of the charity’s retail estate will be affected. Around 600 staff and up to 3,000 volunteers are expected to be impacted, although the organisation has pledged to provide support and redeployment opportunities wherever possible.
In addition to the high street closures, Cancer Research UK will shut down its online marketplace at the start of 2026. However, the charity plans to open 12 new ‘superstores’ across the UK by 2028. These larger outlets, typically based in retail parks, are around four times the size of a traditional charity shop and focus on offering a wider range of goods.
Chief executive Michelle Mitchell said the difficult decision was necessary to safeguard the organisation’s long-term mission.
“Without action, many of our shops would struggle to remain viable,” she said. “By focusing on a smaller, more efficient retail operation, we can enhance our funding for life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.
“We understand that this news may be difficult, and we have made these decisions with careful consideration. Our commitment to supporting everyone affected during this transition remains a top priority, and we will provide clear information and assistance throughout the process.”
The restructuring will see Cancer Research UK reduce its retail portfolio to around 320 high-performing shops nationwide, supported by the development of new superstores designed to sustain income for future cancer research initiatives.
