EDINBURGH-based water retailer Business Stream has saved its customers across the UK more than £31million over the past year, according to new figures released by the company.

The total annual savings for 2020/21 includes nearly £15million in customer discounts and almost £2million in energy savings for its customers. Over £14million of water savings were delivered through Business Stream’s efficiency services, which includes the use of digital monitoring solutions to pro-actively monitor water use even when customers are offsite.

Over the past five years, Business Stream has saved its customers an average of just over £28million per year and since 2008, the company has saved its customers nearly £305million through discounts and efficiencies and over 52 billion litres of water – the equivalent of nearly 21,000 filled Olympic sized swimming pools.

Jo Dow, Chief Executive of Business Stream, said: “We’re passionate about working with our customers to reduce their water use, helping to deliver financial and environmental savings. This past year has been no different. We have continued to generate savings through discounts and efficiencies that have helped customers to reduce their costs and we’ve implemented solutions designed to save water and energy.

“It’s been an unprecedented year as we have continued to meet the needs of all our customers in unique circumstances while providing on-going additional support to those impacted by the pandemic. We are really proud of the savings we’ve delivered and the positive difference we’re making to both our customers and the environment”.

The water retailer recently announced that it had saved Scotland’s public sector over £1million in water costs during the first year of a three-year contract. Just under £1.4million of savings were delivered to the sector through the retailer’s efficiency measures, helping to save 885 million litresof water in the process.

Business Stream was awarded the Scottish Government Public Sector Procurement contract in early 2020 and successfully onboarded over 17,000 sites during the first COVID-19 national lockdown in early April last year. The contract, worth around £200million over three years, covers Scottish public sector bodies including Local Authorities, NHS Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Police Scotland, Scottish Prison Service, universities and colleges and Scottish Government.
