SCOTLAND’S national business advisory service, Business Gateway, has announced a free webinar with Scottish entrepreneur, Vicky Brock, where she will help business owners address their fear of failure, offer tips on building confidence, and encourage them to own their ambitions.
Taking place on Tuesday, 27th June at 12noon, the hour-long session will be hosted by Business Gateway’s Chief Officer, Hugh Lightbody alongside businesswoman, Vicky Brock, as they look at why Scots struggle with failure and how to bounce back if failure does occur.
It comes following the latest Global Entrepreneurship Survey, published last year, which found that more than half of adults not involved in a business in Scotland would say the fear of failure would stop them from setting up their own business.
During the Q&A with Vicky and Hugh, they will look at Vicky’s extensive background in business, the personal failures she has overcome, how to handle conversations around failure with peers, top tips for building confidence, and how to learn from failure. There will also be a chance for attendees to put their own questions to the experienced business duo.
Vicky Brock is a serial startup entrepreneur who co-founded her fifth technology company, Vistalworks, in 2019. The business develops data technology to help consumers stay safe from the risk of dangerous, fake, and illegal products as they shop online.
She has written extensively about her experiences as an entrepreneur and was named ‘Inspiring Woman of the Year’ at the Scotland Women in Tech Awards 2019. She is also an Ambassador for Women’s Enterprise Scotland and regularly talks about technology and startups at conferences and on TV and radio.
In 2018, she hosted a talk at TEDx Talk ‘Involuntary Pause – Embrace the Uncomfortable’ in which she explored failure, and the ‘grief’ she felt after losing her job as the CEO of the company she founded, after five years of dedication and more than 20,000 hours of work.
Hugh Lightbody, Chief Officer at Business Gateway, said:
“We are in one of the toughest climates for business, especially small business owners, between the ongoing financial worries, and the continued recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. We are all too aware that many businesses out there may be feeling isolated and afraid of what the future holds, which can often lead to doubt, so we hope this session can bring some much-needed clarity on how to tackle challenges head-on.
“As a nation, we notoriously struggle with a fear of failure – we want to change mindsets and encourage more business owners to own their ambitions, build belief in themselves and their business, and continue to stay motivated for the future with support from organisations such as Business Gateway.”
Vicky Brock, owner of Vistalworks and entrepreneur, added:
“As a business owner, I understand how tough it can be to captain the ship during challenging periods. I have experienced tough business failure, which has given me solid insights on facing challenges and importantly, how to tackle our mindsets around failure.
“I know Business Gateway is driving the charge in supporting businesses development in Scotland, especially navigating the current climate, and this latest webinar should provide a really valuable session.”
