Burness Paull has significantly strengthened its competition law offering with the appointment of Tom Usher as a senior advisor.

Usher – who is ranked as a senior statesperson by the Chambers and Partners legal directory – was most recently a partner with Macfarlanes in London.

Highly regarded by clients and the wider market, Usher has advised on all aspects of EU and UK competition law for more than 30 years. These include competition compliance, merger clearance and challenges to regulatory decisions, cartel cases, vertical and horizontal agreements, and market studies and investigations.

He has experience of acting for a range of clients – with a particular focus on the financial services sector and other regulated industries – and has brought and defended a number of actions based on competition and wider public law issues before the UK and European courts.

Peter Lawson, chair at Burness Paull, said: “Tom is a true UK market leader in competition law and his appointment will enable us to advise clients with absolute confidence on transactions and other matters with complex competition issues.

“The competition landscape is evolving, as the CMA seeks to fulfil its statutory mandate to promote competition and protect consumers while also responding to the government’s ask of all UK regulators to help attract investment and drive economic growth.

“Tom’s appointment reflects our commitment to ensuring that our clients have access to the best possible advice as they navigate what continues to be a dynamic trading environment.”

Tom Usher added: “I was attracted to Burness Paull for the quality of the team’s work and the strong position the firm has established in the market. I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to bear for our clients and the wider team and playing my role in the firm’s ambitious growth strategy.”
