Councillors have approved plans to give Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries a multi–million–pound revamp, with work due to start in phases from the second half of 2026. Owners Landsec say the project will deliver a “comprehensive modernisation” of the existing mall rather than the full demolition that had previously been considered.

The scheme will introduce a new destination food hall inside the centre, aimed at broadening Buchanan Galleries’ appeal beyond traditional retail. An additional retail unit is also planned on the gap site adjacent to the mall, creating more frontage onto the surrounding streets and strengthening its position on Glasgow’s prime shopping spine.

Landsec asset management director Charlie Griffiths said the company was “delighted” with the council’s decision to back the plans. He described the proposals as a key step in efforts “to refurbish and enhance Buchanan Galleries and the top of the town”, aligning with calls for better retail and leisure options in the city centre.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said the revamp would add to a “real sense of momentum” in the heart of the city. She said the refurbished Buchanan Galleries could be “a major catalyst” for the next chapter of Glasgow city centre, sitting alongside other investments already under way or in the pipeline.

The upgrade will also see investment in new lighting, contemporary digital art and modern advertising displays throughout the mall. Crucially for traders, the shopping centre is expected to remain open during the phased construction programme, with work carefully sequenced to minimise disruption for retailers and shoppers.
