Landsec has revealed the significant role Buchanan Galleries continues to play in Glasgow’s economic and social landscape, with its latest annual social and economic impact report showing the city-centre destination contributed £76,004,184 to the local economy in 2025 while supporting 1,521 jobs.
As one of Glasgow’s leading retail and leisure destinations, Buchanan Galleries remains a key part of everyday life in the city, extending its influence beyond retail through job creation, community engagement and business support.
The report highlights that in 2025, the centre supported 1,521 roles across Landsec, retail partners and on-site businesses. In addition, 499 people were helped closer to employment through targeted initiatives including employability partnerships and work placements, designed to provide practical, hands-on experience.
Buchanan Galleries also delivered £839,579.91 in social value over the year through a range of community-focused investments. These included bursaries, grants, volunteering programmes and local partnerships, all aimed at strengthening community wellbeing, fostering local pride and building long-term resilience.
Sustainability remains a key focus, with the destination achieving a 26% reduction in energy intensity in 2025. The milestone reflects Landsec’s wider commitment to creating places that support both environmental responsibility and long-term value for local communities.
Ongoing investment continues to strengthen Buchanan Galleries’ retail and leisure offering. Recent additions include Philly Express and American Dirty Soda, while Charity Super.Mkt has confirmed its Glasgow location is its strongest-performing store to date. Meanwhile, John Lewis & Partners has announced a £20 million transformation of its Glasgow site, marking its largest single-store investment in more than five years.
The centre is also playing a vital role in supporting social initiatives. It provides a city-centre base for Social Bite, the charity tackling homelessness, which over the past year delivered 66,145 free food and drink items, supported seven people into employment through its Jobs First programme and funded 416 nights of emergency accommodation.
Looking ahead, Buchanan Galleries is undergoing a major redevelopment programme, including a modernisation of the existing mall, improved retail frontage and the introduction of new leisure and dining spaces. Plans include a destination food hall and an additional major retail unit capable of housing a flagship store.
The centre continues to build strong community partnerships, working with organisations such as Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and supporting initiatives like Made in Glasgow, which champions local talent and inclusivity.
In Case You Missed It:
Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “Retail destinations are part of the fabric of the communities they serve. They help local businesses grow, create employment opportunities and provide places where people can come together, connect and spend time.
“The findings published today demonstrate the important contribution Buchanan Galleries continues to make to Glasgow. By investing in the destination, supporting employment, working with community partners and operating more sustainably, we’re helping businesses and communities thrive. In turn, that attracts further investment, supports long-term growth and creates lasting value for the local area.”
Social and economic impact data relates to 1 January to 31 December 2025.
