BP has announced a shake‑up of its global organisation and executive leadership as it continues its shift from a traditional oil major towards what it describes as an integrated energy company. The company is simplifying reporting lines, trimming its most senior team and clarifying responsibilities across its core business units to improve focus and accountability.

Under the changes, BP’s executive leadership is being streamlined in a move designed to cut duplication and complexity at the top of the business. The group will continue to be organised around its main businesses and a tighter set of central functions including finance, technology, strategy, sustainability and ventures, people and culture, and legal.

Leadership appointments and organisational shifts

As part of the organisational reset, BP is making a series of leadership appointments and role changes intended to align management more closely with its simplified structure. The moves will see responsibilities consolidated, with senior executives taking on broader mandates across the redefined business segments.

At the same time, BP is refreshing its central functions to reinforce areas such as technology and innovation, which support operations and transition projects from digital tools to engineering and safety. Regional reporting lines are also being adjusted so that key geographies sit more clearly within the restructured business units, strengthening accountability and speeding up decision‑making.

Meg O’Neill, bp chief executive, said: “Over the past two months, I have spent time with our teams, partners and investors around the world, and I am encouraged by the strong support for our strategic direction. Focusing bp around two distinct segments is an important step in accelerating delivery. It will reduce complexity and strengthen execution.

“bp has an incredibly capable team, with deep expertise across the oil and gas value chain. We are capitalizing on opportunities across our portfolio, strengthening the balance sheet and unlocking sustainable growth. We are moving firmly towards a simpler, stronger and more valuable bp.”

Strategic rationale

The restructuring continues BP’s attempt to balance investor pressure for strong near‑term returns from oil and gas with its longer‑term ambition to grow in lower‑carbon energy. By simplifying management layers and concentrating responsibilities, the company aims to cut overheads, streamline investment decisions and provide a clearer line of sight between strategy and delivery.

O’Neill has framed the changes as a deliberate step towards a “simpler, stronger and more valuable bp”, arguing that the new set‑up will allow the company to execute its strategy with greater discipline and speed. The simplification also gives the chief executive an opportunity to put her stamp on the organisation as it navigates a complex and fast‑moving global energy landscape.
