BP has announced that its Chair, Helge Lund, will step down from his role, likely during 2026, as the company initiates a succession process to appoint his successor.
Dame Amanda Blanc, BP’s Senior Independent Director, will lead the search with support from the wider board.
The chosen candidate will join BP’s board and collaborate with Lund to ensure a smooth transition before assuming the position of Chair.
During this period, Lund will continue to oversee BP’s strategic objectives, including delivering its reset strategy aimed at improving performance and growing shareholder value.
Lund said: “Having fundamentally reset our strategy, bp’s focus now is on delivering the strategy at pace, improving performance and growing shareholder value. Now is the right time to start the process to find my successor and enable an orderly and seamless handover.
“The board and I are committed to supporting Murray and his team, and to overseeing bp’s delivery of its strategic and financial objectives as we set out in our recent Capital Markets Update.”
Amanda Blanc added that BP is conducting a comprehensive search for candidates with the credibility and experience needed to lead the board and execute the company’s strategic priorities safely.
This leadership change comes amidst a turbulent period for BP, marked by activist shareholder pressure and a strategic pivot away from green energy towards increased investment in oil and gas.
