East Ayrshire–based Utopia Computers has secured planning permission to convert the former Bellfield Tavern on Welbeck Road into its new headquarters and large-scale computer workshop. The move will see the once-bustling pub reborn as a modern tech hub, with expanded space for building custom PCs, repairing devices and supporting a growing online order book.
Owner Craig Hume described the project as a “massive” step for the firm, which has outgrown its existing Kilmarnock premises and needs more room for staff, stock and specialist equipment. Locals who remember the Bellfield as a popular community pub are now watching its evolution into a future-facing digital business that still keeps jobs and investment rooted in the town.
The redevelopment has been welcomed by community figures and councillors as a positive example of a home-grown company choosing to expand close to its customer base instead of relocating elsewhere. As well as safeguarding existing roles, Utopia’s larger base is expected to support new jobs in technical, customer service and logistics positions as the business scales up.
By breathing new life into a long-abandoned building, the project aligns with wider regeneration work in East Ayrshire aimed at tackling derelict sites and encouraging more varied uses for former hospitality venues. For Bellfield residents, it means a familiar landmark will once again be lit up and occupied – this time as a technology destination rather than a bar.
