Tickets have gone on sale for a major Barbie exhibition opening at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow this summer, marking the first time the showcase has come to Scotland.
Barbie: The Exhibition will chart the history and design of the world-famous doll from her debut in 1959 through to the present day, featuring more than 150 dolls, outfits, playsets and vehicles. A rare, hand-painted first edition Barbie will sit alongside landmark releases including the first black, Hispanic and Asian dolls, as well as the first Barbie with Down’s Syndrome and the first in a wheelchair.
The show, created in partnership with the Design Museum in London and Barbie maker Mattel Inc, promises a blend of fashion, social history and pop culture, with displays that highlight how the brand has evolved over the decades. Visitors can expect to see favourites such as the 1971 Sunset Malibu Barbie, the 1985 Day to Night Barbie with her transformable pink work suit, and 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie, famous for her ankle-length locks. Rare Barbie Dreamhouses, vehicles and accessories will also be on display, alongside a dedicated section on Ken and his changing look since his first appearance in 1961.
Bailie Annette Christie, chair of Glasgow Life, which runs Kelvingrove, said the exhibition would be one of the city’s standout cultural events of the summer. “Now spring has sprung and the days are getting longer, it’s a joy to start planning the adventures ahead this summer,” she said, adding that Glasgow was “honoured” to be the first Scottish city to host a major exhibition dedicated to the “enduring icon” that is Barbie. She encouraged people to book early and “make a real day of it” with family and friends.
