Report highlights Scotland as home to UK’s youngest renters
A new report from Scottish lettings and estate agencies DJ Alexander and Clyde Property reveals the average rent in Scotland now sits at £1,135 per calendar month (pcm). The insights report, based on Goodlord and LomondIQ data, also indicates that move-ins across Scotland’s rental hotspots increased by 13% year-on-year.
Scotland is home to the UK’s youngest renters, with an average age of 25 years old, compared to the average UK renter age of 31.5 years. Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Central Belt were noted as stand-out locations for renters.
The report suggests that property remains a good investment across Scotland, with investor interest in Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) growing due to strong yields. In the sales market, buyers are increasingly seeking move-in-ready homes, with presentation now carrying equal weight to location in a buyer’s decision-making.
In Case You Missed It:
Advice to sellers this quarter has consistently been to invest in presentation before going to market, as overpriced properties sit on the market for longer. Scotland’s city centre markets remain particularly resilient, and the first-time buyer market has held up well, especially for two-bedroom apartments.
Ben Alexander, Director of New Business, Scotland, said: “Our insights report shows the property market in Scotland has seen seller confidence resume and we expect this to remain active throughout the second part of the year. In lettings, Q2 2026 was busier than expected, running well ahead of what is normal for the period. Our advice to landlords and investors remains clear: a well-maintained, well-presented property attracts a reliable and responsible tenant, one who is more likely to stay longer.”
