A planning application for 48 much-needed affordable homes at Ravenscraig has been approved by North Lanarkshire Council.

Submitted by McTaggart Construction, North Lanarkshire Council and Ravenscraig Limited, the new homes will be built on Prospecthill Road, adding to the growing residential community within the site of the former steelworks. The approved development will consist of three residential blocks totalling 48 mixed one- and two-bedroom flats as well as resident car parking and open landscaping incorporated into the design.

Ravenscraig is one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects, with a vision to create a self-sufficient community offering high-quality homes, education, transport links, and employment opportunities. More than 1,000 homes have already been delivered, alongside £4.7 million in education contributions to North Lanarkshire Council.

The latest approval comes amid strong progress across the site, including investment of £12m by Fusion Assets Ltd to deliver 62,000 sqft multi let industrial scheme and a new 38,000 sq ft vehicle workshop and sales facility by Motus Commercials both progressing within Ravenscraig’s SevenFourEight employment hub. Additionally, proposals are being progressed by renewable energy developer Apatura for a £3.9 billion green AI data campus at Ravenscraig that could create 2,400 jobs.

Russell Wilkie, Director at Ravenscraig Limited, said: “Providing high-quality, affordable homes is central to our vision for Ravenscraig. Over the past year, we’ve made significant progress in delivering the masterplan, and the approval of 48 new affordable homes is another important milestone in creating a vibrant, sustainable community. Our ambition is to build a truly self-sufficient place where people not only have high-quality homes, but also easy access to the services, amenities, and opportunities they need to thrive.”

Janice Russell, Director at McTaggart Construction, said: “We’re delighted to get the green light for these 48 affordable homes at Ravenscraig. In the midst of Scotland’s housing crisis, every affordable home counts, and this development addresses a critical need in the local community. We’re committed to delivering quality homes that will serve families here for years to come, and it’s another solid step forward in building out this important regeneration site.”

Cllr Michael Mcpake, Convener of Housing, North Lanarkshire Council, said: “We welcome this latest planning approval for new homes at Ravenscraig, which will support our commitment to deliver 6,000 new council homes by 2035. The Prospecthill Road development will provide much-needed affordable housing and support the wider regeneration of Ravenscraig, including the planned new access road, funded through City Deal and the council, to enable future development and create opportunities for local people.”
