The first regional heat of a nationwide contest to find the Painting and Decorating Association’s Apprentice of the Year 2025 has taken place in Glasgow.
Junior and Senior apprentices had just six hours to scale up, sketch out and paint a complex image designed to test their stamina, accuracy and skill as part of the national competition.
Top-scorers at the Glasgow event will join the best performers from four other regional heats held in England and Wales, at a Grand Final event held in Doncaster in May.
PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie said: “The PDA’s Apprentice of the Year competition is a gruelling task that is both physically and mentally demanding – and it’s been fantastic to observe apprentices from across Scotland as they’ve taken on the challenge.
“Judging this competition can be a tough job – we’ve been impressed with the effort and skill that has been on display.”
Held at City of Glasgow College on Thursday 13 March, the competition attracted 21 entrants from across Scotland.
Tutor at the college, Michael McEwan said: “This is the third year we’ve hosted the Painting and Decorating Association Apprentice of the Year competition and it’s once again been a good day and a good experience for these students.
“For the first time we’re hosting the very first heat of the competition and it’s been great to see the talent that’s been brought here today by all of the colleges and companies that are involved with apprenticeships up here in Scotland.
“The competitions are important to our trade because it showcases the work that they do as students and the talent that we have out there within the industry.”
Winners will be announced at the PDA’s prestigious Premier Trophy Awards, held at Plaisterers’ Hall, London, in July.
