AON plc, a leading global professional services firm, is to host the first in a series of Construction Risk seminars in Scotland tomorrow (30th November).

Aimed at the region’s construction managers, project managers, architects, designers, health and safety specialists, finance directors, and construction consultants, the seminar will hear from risk management, insurance and legal experts from Aon, Zurich and DAC Beachcroft.

The focus of this first event will include Sustainable Construction Methods, a topic high on the agenda for an industry working towards ever more stringent carbon reduction and Net Zero targets. In particular the panel will look at the use of timber in construction, and offer practical advice for reducing risk of fire, water damage and theft through clever design and careful project management.

The session will also cover issues surrounding under insurance, building regulations, contractual scrutiny, and examine case studies outlining lessons learned from large losses faced by contractors in recent years.

Gavin Carson, Regional Managing Director for Aon in Scotland, said that mitigating the risks associated with the use of timber in construction would allow contractors and their clients to benefit from the sustainability and supply-chain positives that the use of sustainable materials offers.

“People want to use timber due to the sustainability credentials it presents. Contractors are also keen because price and availability have remained more stable than some other construction products, and it is more efficient.

“Hearing the unique perspective of the insurers themselves during this session will, therefore, provide guests with valuable insight into what they need to do in order to deliver on the green agenda whilst ensuring they effectively manage risks.”

Speakers will include Aon’s Alex Whitters, a construction risk specialist from the Edinburgh office; Dominick Rodgers, Lorna Beaton and Robert Innes from Zurich Insurance; and Jilly Petrie, partner in construction at DAC Beachcroft.

Topics they will cover include:

  • Sustainable construction methods and Insurance challenges
  • Risk Management expectations.
  • Importance of correct sums insured
  • Building regulation considerations
  • Risk liability and insurance – the importance of contractual scrutiny
  • Large losses case studies – lessons learned

The event is being held at Aon’s office in 60 York Street Glasgow, G2 8JX on Wednesday November 30th from 8.30-10.30am.

The seminar will be followed by an informal Q&A session and guests will be invited to stay for networking and a light breakfast.

Entry is free but all guests must be pre-registered as places are limited.
