Aldi now Scotland’s third-biggest supermarket by volume

21/06/2023

ALDI Scotland is set to make its 13th appearance at the country’s famous Royal Highland Show this week, this time as the third biggest supermarket in Scotland by number of units sold, to showcase the success of their Scottish range as customers buy more items from Aldi than ever before.

As the discount retailer unveils its impressive lineup of Scottish suppliers attending the event, new data from Kantar reveals its volume share of the grocery market has increased to 11%, moving ahead of Morrisons and Sainsbury’s for the first time.

Aldi Scotland now commands a higher volume market share than Co-op (7.2%), Sainsbury’s (7.6%), Lidl (8.9%) and Morrisons (8.8%), in Scotland, behind only Asda (13.8%) and Tesco (24%). The data, which is collected by research body Kantar, looked at volume market share over a 12-week period until 14th May.

Aldi’s growth in Scotland is testament to their commitment to local sourcing, as Scottish suppliers enjoy large volume increases on the products they deliver every day, which in turn helps build sustainable businesses in Scotland.  Aldi were crowned Scottish Sourcing Business of the Year at the Scotland Food and Drink Awards 2022 and are proud to report that 25% of sales in Scotland are from Scottish sourced products.

The record volume market share comes as Aldi prepares to return to the Royal Highland Show 2023. Now in its 201st year, Scotland’s biggest outdoor event will head to the Ingliston showground in Edinburgh to showcase the best of the country’s food, farming, and rural life, and is expected to attract around 200,000 people.

Aldi will once again be taking up a prominent position with its marquee on Avenue O30(P), where it will exhibit 18 of its Scottish suppliers, giving visitors the chance to sample some of the country’s finest local produce from brands such as Browning’s the Bakers, Eden Mill, Stockan’s Oatcakes and Angus Soft Fruits.

Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director, Aldi Scotland, said: “This is a momentous moment for Aldi in Scotland, as we continue to build our presence within the Scottish market.  We are committed to offering our customers top quality products at affordable prices and as the data shows people are switching to shopping with Aldi in their droves.

We are very proud of the strong relationship we have built with our Scottish suppliers, which gives our customers the opportunity to purchase locally sourced high-quality products and support Scottish businesses.

The Royal Highland Show is something we look forward to every year and I am grateful to our network of suppliers who are supporting us at this year’s event.  I encourage everyone attending the show to visit our marquee and try our Scottish range for themselves; I guarantee they won’t be disappointed.”

This year’s Royal Highland Show runs from Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th June.
